Crown and Bridgework
What is a Crown?
A crown is a tooth shaped restoration that is placed over the individual tooth in order to restore its shape, increase its strength or to enhance its appearance. A crown is indicated in order to:
- Protect a weak tooth from breaking (such as previous root canal treatment, large cavities or a broken down large filling)
- Strengthen worn teeth
- Cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth
- Cover a dental implant
- Relieve unexplained pain due to hairline cracks in back teeth.
What is a bridge?
A bridge serves to fill the space created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge uses the two teeth on both sides of the space as abutments to anchor a false tooth or teeth in between (the false tooth/teeth are called pontics). Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants. Dental bridges can:
- Restore your smile
- Restore your ability to chew and speak
- Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
Crown and bridgework can restore a natural-looking smile when accidents, disease or wear and tear cause damage to teeth. Porcelain or porcelain-on-metal crowns are extremely reliable for long-lasting repair of even the most severe dental problems, including permanent replacement of missing teeth to give you a complete smile and a functional bite.
How long does it take?
Fitting a crown typically requires two visits to our office. During the first visit we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary plastic or metal crown.
On your second visit we will remove the temporary crown, then fit, adjust and permanently place the final crown resulting in a new, natural-looking tooth.
